Groups Walks Description
This is the “must do” walk, miss it and you’ve missed Odessa. For Odessa Through the Centuries tour takes you through two hundred years of the city’s history. Worried that you will spend an hour and a half listening to a monotonous lecture packed with boring facts, stats and people’s names? Not at all! The city’s past is a cocktail of funny stories cast in stone and we take it all in: how Odessa’s iconic sight appeared and why it was called Potemkin Steps, why the statue to the French prime-minister was erected on the donations of the Odessa’s poor and rich and has become a symbol of Odessa; the city’s beating heart of all times – Primorsky boulevard and its secrets.
The four foreigners met on a Russian military vessel in 1780s- Jose de Ribas, Duc de Richelieu, Count of Langeron and François de Wollant. The first one convinced Russian Empress to found Odessa on a totally deserted piece of land, the second one made it the 3rd largest city in Russia in just 11 years, the third one established here a free economic zone, which boosted city’s economy, and, finally, the last one created the city plan used to built Odessa. Quite an impact!
Want to step aside from the downtown’s traditional routes and learn if there’s anything else there besides Primorsky boulevard and Deribasovskaya street? Then, this walk is for you! Totally off the beaten track, this walking tour takes you through the area, which lies across the road from Deribasovskaya, and takes you further to the quarters once populated by the city’s first craftsmen, later by artists, doctors and men of science. This is the area where the oldest city market and the second in the world bacteriological lab are. And if you want to hear a few stories about criminal Odessa (yep, Odessa used to be reallyyyy infamous for its criminal world and could be easily called “Russian Chicago” of 1930s), you should definitely go!
Join us as we explore the tree-lined streets of Odessa’s historic city center. Seek out ethnic eateries and charming neighborhood restaurants. Odessa offers a unique cuisine – a mix of Greek, Bulgarian, Jewish, French, Russian and Ukrainian. During this tour you will enjoy a variety of food specialties that has secured Odessa’s reputation as being one of the greatest culinary and cultural centers of Ukraine and former USSR.
The Odessa Pubs walk makes for truly memorable and entertaining experience. By focusing on the off the beaten path sights of the historic city center you can explore some truly fascinating places. Alleyways and entrances of the buildings become gateways of discovery through which you step and find yourself gazing upon parts of Odessa that you would never dream existed.
