PRIVOZ MARKET AND MOLDAVANKA TOUR
Moldavanka tour and Privoz market is the experience to take if you’d like to get a different dimension of the city. We visit Odessa’s famous Privoz market and sample local food. We tour enchanting Moldavanka neighborhood, made famous by Isaac Babel’s Tales of Odessa.
This is a very fun and interesting private walking tour. We start the Moldavanka tour with a visit to the famous Privoz market, called by the locals Odessa’s “stomach”. Strolling through its huge food pavilions we explore local eating habits, see the variety of regional foods and watch Odesseans shop. The most adventures tour guests can savor a selection of home-made sausage from a Ukrainian village, cottage and feta cheese (aka “brinza”) from a Bulgarian village and Black Sea sardines.
From Privoz we walk to Moldavanka. Famous for its courtyards and red cats (and we see a lot of them), Moldavanka is often perceived as a Jewish ghetto of the 19th century Odessa. Is it true? How did this neighborhood appear and develop? Why did it get a criminal flavor?
We stroll the Moldavanka’s main avenues, sneaking a peek behind the façades of the buildings. We check courtyards with a symbol of Moldavanka, an old dovecoat. These courtyards tell so much about Moldavanka’s old and contemporary lifestyle. We visit the area of the former Jewish hospital and the Holocaust memorial. The only Holocaust memorial in Odessa is located in Moldavanka and we’ll tell you why.
How about exploring Moldavanka sights described in Babel’s Tales of Odessa? We certainly follow in the footsteps of his characters.
